Mother's Day & Vintage Afternoon Tea

There's something special about drinking tea from china teacups, adding sugar by the cube with silver tongs and eating generously sliced cake with dainty forks. A pretty tablecloth is a must, and the sandwich fillings should be plentiful. Afternoon tea has grown in popularity in recent years, but I've noticed increasing numbers of cafes and restaurants promoting afternoon tea for Mother's Day.

It's certainly nice to go out and have afternoon tea made for you, but it can be difficult finding somewhere that's reasonably priced but also provides satisfying portions. I've sampled afternoon tea in a number of places, and often I find that the pricier it is, the less food you get. It's worth considering preparing afternoon tea at home and investing in some key afternoon tea pieces that can be kept for years to come. It could even become a yearly tradition. Below are some afternoon tea themed pieces currently available in the shop.

If you don't feel like preparing everything from scratch, Marks & Spencer conveniently offer pre-made selections of triangle sandwiches, savoury pastries and mini quiches, although you do have to order a couple of days in advance. And of course, afternoon tea at home doesn't just have to be for Mother's Day, it works well for baby showers, engagement parties and birthday celebrations too!
